Windy first day!
Saturday marked the beginning of spring training practices for the Mariners. The pitchers and catchers, who have been practicing for a week, were ready for the rest of the position players to make their way to the field so that spring training practices could officially begin. But the first day was not an easy one...they were greeted with 40 mph hour winds and temperatures in the high 50's. Not necessarily what you would expect from Arizona. During part of the practice, the catchers were asked to throw to the bases. But that isn't too easy with the wind blowing straight in your face. Chris said it was really tough to be on target with the wind blowing the ball in every direction! Sunday was not much better, but instead of wind the Mariners got rain...and lots of it. But they continue practice regardless of the conditions because in one week games start and they have to be ready. And with 63 guys invited to big league camp this year, there is a lot of work to do to ensure that everyone is on the same page for the first game next Saturday.
Seattle is opening the spring season with a charity game against the Padres. Neither team will have to travel far because they share the stadium at the Peoria Sports Complex. The stands should be filled for the home opener because both "home teams" will be there! From that day on, Seattle will play a game every day until March 31st with only one day off. So Chris and the rest of the team should enjoy their current schedule because in just a week their days will turn from 6 hour days to 10 hour days! It's definitely a grueling schedule, but it helps to show the coaches who has the determination, stamina and focus and who doesn't. Let the games begin! :)
