Thursday night, Chris found out that he was getting called up to the Mariners! Yippee!! He was in Sacramento for the Rainiers first series of the season. After the game he heard the news and by Friday morning he had a first class ticket in his hand heading up to Seattle. We are all so excited for him....and lucky for me it happened the night before I was going to make the drive to Sacramento to watch a couple games! How it all worked out was kind of sad. Chris was called up to fill that back-up catcher role. The back up catcher has to get knee surgery after trying to dive after a ball. We never hope that someone gets hurt...and we feel awful for the other catcher. But, when you really look at it, all the pieces kind of all fell into place.
Friday night just happened to be the home opener for Seattle...Chris has never been with a team for opening day and that is something that he has always wanted to experience. And to make it even better, Seattle was playing the Indians! Seriously...it was perfect timing! Not only did he get to experience opening day, but he also got to face his former team!
We had a busy Friday too! After we found out the news, my mom and I packed the truck and drove up to Seattle in one day! 13 hours in the car was a long trip! Max came along for the ride and was such a trooper and slept most of the drive! He's the best traveling dog! We didn't make Friday's game, but that's ok. Tomorrow we are going to check into our new apartment, get the furniture delivered and make it feel like home before the game tomorrow night! It's a crazy life sometimes! You just never know what can happen one day to the next!
There was a great article on Chris on the mariners website...check it out! :)
Gimenez excited to be back in Majors
By Greg Johns / MLB.com | 04/08/11 10:33 PM ET
SEATTLE -- Chris Gimenez called it "the perfect storm," getting called
up to the Major Leagues for his first home opener, with the opponent
on the other side just happening to be his former Cleveland Indians
teammates.
Gimenez, 28, had his contract selected from Triple-A Tacoma on
Friday to replace injured Mariners catcher Adam Moore, who was
placed on the 60-day disabled list.
Gimenez played for manager Eric Wedge in Cleveland in '09 and hit .160
with four home runs and 15 RBIs over parts of the past two seasons for
the Indians. He's a versatile "super utility" player who can catch, play the
outfield, and first and third base, if needed.
He didn't play in Tacoma's opener on Thursday in Sacramento, then
was told after the game by Rainiers manager Daren Brown that he
was headed to Seattle to take Moore's place as the backup catcher to
Miguel Olivo.
"Nobody wants it to happen that way, but this is the situation, and now that
I'm here I need to come in and help out," Gimenez said. "It's go time, and
I'm very glad to be here. I've always wanted to be here for an Opening Day,
so it's pretty cool in my book. Especially against Cleveland, my old team,
so that's a little extra added in."
Gimenez hit .207 in Cactus League play, but impressed the Mariners with
his versatility. He was assigned to Tacoma after being optioned on the
cut down to the 25-man roster.
"I was really impressed with what I saw this spring, the way he handled
himself at the plate, as well as multiple positions," Wedge said. "He can
go left, right, first, third and behind the plate ... and maybe a few other
positions he hasn't told me about yet."
Gimenez also can go from Tacoma to Seattle in a hurry, it turns out.
"How quick you can go from down here to up here is nuts," he said of
the emotional roller coaster of the last two weeks. "Being in the field
of broken dreams on Field 13 in Peoria [Ariz.], and a week later
you're here? It's pretty crazy."
Moore tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in the eighth inning
of Seattle's series-ending loss in Texas on Wednesday and will undergo
surgery this coming Tuesday. The Mariners are making no prognosis
on how long he'll be out until the surgery is done, but have placed him
on the 60-day DL, retroactive to April 7.
Wedge said Moore's injury was actually a good-news case, in terms of
there not being major ligament damage that would have ended his season.
"We're not really going to know until the doctor gets in there and looks
at everything," Wedge said. "But it could have been worse. He'll get the
surgery done Tuesday and we'll hope for the best then."
